Across the Narragansett Bay from Newport, Rhode Island, is the gem of Jamestown. It has a charm all of its own and can easily become a day trip from Newport or Providence, RI. Whether walking the width of the island or driving to explore Beavertail State Park and the remainder of the area, you will not be disappointed.
Start your day by exploring North Main Street in Jamestown. You’ll be able to soak in sites of the sea at the beginning and visit shops as you continue your adventure. Then, head down Narragansett Avenue, which, if you are up for a walk, can take you to one of our dining picks.
But first, stop at Slice of Heaven to grab a coffee.
By now, the Jamestown Fire Department Museum should be open, and we highly recommend taking a quick trip in. We are certain you’ll be greeted by a wonderful volunteer that may take you down memory lane.
Then, slowly begin making your way to The Shack at Dutch Harbor where you will be eating tacos by the sea. It’s a no frills lunch that will leave you smiling, especially with the views it offers.
Once back in your car, it’s time to make your way south. Take your time, as there’s a lot to be seen along the way.
Then, you’ll run into Beavertail State Park where you can park the car and tour the Beavertail Lighthouse, which dates back to 1856, and marked the entrance to Narragansett Bay.
If time permits, we recommend finding a spot by the sea and simply soaking in all of the sites. It’s hard to beat a sea view like Jamestown offers.
