The Victoria’s Secret photographer who has been with the brand for nearly two decades, Russell James, celebrated the launch of his new book last night – “Backstage Secrets: A Decade Behind the Scenes at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show“.
“Tonight I was asked what is at the heart of my new book ‘Backstage Secrets’,” James shared via social media. “The answer is simple. Friendship. I feel incredibly blessed and lucky to be a part of this family. As my cohost Ed Razek well said, ‘We never forget what side of the lens we are on’. Thanks to my amazing friends for an amazing launch.”

On hand to help James enjoy the moment were Martha Hunt, Sara Sampaio, Gigi Hadid, Ming Xi, Malaika Firth, Josephine Skriver, Zuri Tibby, Lameka Fox, Jacquelyn Jablonski, Lais Ribeiro and more. The event was held at the Alley Cat Amateur Theater, beneath the Beekman Hotel in New York City.
Sampaio spoke with Vogue about working with James.
“I always know when I see his name on the call sheet that it’s going to be a fun day. He doesn’t take himself too seriously. He’s always barefoot and has hilarious dad jokes, but his photos are beautiful.”
James added about the book to Vogue, “This book only took about half an hour to put together, but 18 years to shoot. This is really a curation of moments that I feel like reflect something intimate and personal about the subject, and I wanted to give a bit of insight into what it’s like to be back there.”
